The future of healthcare is about understanding this changing landscape, with a focus on creating innovative solutions that enhance the patient experience.  Healthcare spaces need to foster an environment that is both people-centric as well as supporting cutting-edge technology expressed through an efficient design.

This project provided a much-needed renovation of the entire Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) Outpatient Surgery Center, including new supporting administrative space on the floor below, new rooftop HVAC units, and seismic upgrades to the building.
Our design approach began with an intensive Discovery phase to evaluate the space needs, functional requirements, staff and patient flow, and building system efficacy. In addition to regular stakeholder workshops, we embedded ourselves for three days into the surgery center environment to observe workflows and interview staff. This interaction was vital to our team’s understanding of the most critical renovation needs, which included better acoustic and physical privacy for patients, centralized storage, right-sized spaces, and building systems upgrades.
The remodel includes three operating rooms, three procedure rooms, 12 patient bays, two nurse stations, a scope processing department that serves the adjoining hospital, and new administrative space on the lower level. The new design provides staff visibility into the Pre-Op/PACU patient areas from two centralized nurse stations.
The interiors feature calming blue and green tones with warm wood accents inspired by the Monterey coastline. Clean lines and midcentury modern influence are taken from the existing hospital’s architecture. The new layout preserves the exterior views from the waiting room, operating rooms and PACU bays to the surrounding forest landscape, a beloved feature by staff and visitors.

Parking Structure 4 at UC Davis Health&#8217;s Sacramento campus is a successful example of a human-centered design solution for an urban medical center. Designed for flow and a safe user experience, the entry and exits to the south side of the structure were relocated from the original plan so vehicular traffic is segregated from the pedestrian flow. This offers the user clarity and sets the tone for various wayfinding and lighting strategies. The use of ECO Falcon cameras for available stall detection and LED lighting provide the most technologically advanced systems available for the parking structure.
Reinforcing the horizontality of the campus’ aesthetics, integral color and form liners throughout the precast elements provide textures and tones. The structural layout reduces columns and increases opening sizes, focusing daylight into the center of the structure. Level indicators are located clearly on column faces, combined with directional signage.
Site design promotes a safe and intuitive user experience. Landscaping softens the impact of the structure on the surrounding residential neighborhood and integrates a nature walk with native species. Shuttle stops, bike shelters and bike share options are available at the main pedestrian exits, giving users safe access to their last mile of transportation. Security is intentional yet not obvious; implementing CPTED best practices.
Parking Structure 4 is designed to achieve Parksmart Silver certification.

Sutter SeniorCare Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) was designed exclusively for the aging and frail adult community. The focus of PACE is providing high-quality care and services to participants, to maintain their health and independence, preventing premature nursing home placement.
This project merges two existing PACE centers into one comprehensive facility, reducing redundancy, optimizing staff workflow and functionality, and allowing for program growth. The renovated 44,000-square-foot facility provides a large adult day care center with full kitchen, library, gardening and craft areas; adjacent clinic space (OSHPD 3) for medical, dental and physical therapy; and approximately 15,000 square feet of offices for facility staff and Sutter Health employees.
The existing building has light-filled interior and exterior courtyards, providing calming elements, tranquil outdoor views and extra therapy space. The interior design is inspired by the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers, representing the merging of two facilities, as well as patient home life merging with PACE life. The overall design incorporates organically-influenced materials combined with modern design elements. to create a high-end, hospitality-inspired interior environment.

On UC Davis Health’s Sacramento campus, Parking Structure 5 provides exceptional space for patients, visitors, and staff to feel safe, clearly find their way, and efficiently park their vehicle in a very open and day-lit space. With all vehicles entering and exiting the structure through a subterranean entrance off the adjacent mid-block intersection, the cross-campus flow of pedestrians and bicycles is uninterrupted.
Serving the Cancer Center and new California Tower, the structure brings stalls with a flexible layout, focused on accessibility on every floor with the potential to accommodate loading areas for patient drop-off inside the structure. Using architectural precast concrete, extruded aluminum fins, solid and perforated aluminum panels and fully glazed elevator towers, the architectural form and material expression celebrate the high-quality spaces and representation of the design-focus for the medical campus.
Photovoltaic panels installed on the top floor provide electricity to the structure. There is also short term bike stalls, and long-term secure bike parking for 125 inside the structure.
Parking Structure 5 is designed to achieve Parksmart Gold certification.

For over 50 years, San Joaquin County’s Public Health Services (PHS) has been providing various health-related programs and testing for its residents in the same 60-year-old building. In dire need of a modern replacement, we designed a new facility for PHS with a modern work environment, improving customer service and operational efficiencies. The new building also allows a greater flexibility for staffing fluctuations in response to County population increases, along with expected legislative and economic changes over the next 25 years. This new facility includes offices, client service areas, and a BSL-2 Lab space.
Inside the offices, working environments are organized around a central entry space serving as the activity hub for both the public and staff. The entry is designed to provide intuitive wayfinding enabling the public to efficiently locate their service point. The single-story structure utilizes skylights throughout, as well as large expanses of glazing in offices providing ample daylighting for staff. Large overhangs at the public entry and outdoor staff lounges provide an extension of the interior environment to the outdoors.
The new Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) Lab is designed in conformance with requirements per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for precautions and contamination isolation. General laboratory spaces were developed with an open floor plan maximizing efficiency, visibility, and natural light.
This facility’s design not only integrates various County programs and their unique requirements under one roof, but also provides an efficient, sustainable, and flexible facility for another 60+ years of continuous use.

We completed design and construction administration services to repurpose former dental hygiene instruction spaces in the Chan Family Health Sciences Learning Center and Clinics building on the University of the Pacific campus. The main goal of the project was expansion of instructional spaces and providing comfortable student study and lounge areas for better learning, patient care and recruitment of highly-qualified students. The building now houses facilities for the Pharmacy School with state-of-the-art lecture classrooms, clinics, faculty offices, and bright, open study spaces for students. In addition, the project expands tele-health teaching, research and services for student health practitioners to reach more Veterans Affairs patients.

Thirteen years in the making, a much anticipated Chapel &#038; Spiritual Center, has been realized for Sutter Health Women &#038; Children’s Center in Sacramento.
Serving the needs of patients, families, and hospital staff from diverse religious, spiritual, and cultural backgrounds, the Chapel &#038; Spiritual Center offers an environment promoting renewal of the spirit. Envisioned as a place where visitors can find a sense of solace in the midst of crisis and daily stress, this peaceful space provides opportunity for contemplation, reflection, and prayer.
Local Artist Deanna Marsh, designed a kiln-formed glass sculpture for the chapel’s main feature wall. The rich palette of liquid blues, greens, and iridescent silver and gold on the vertical plane symbolize a spiritual interaction with divine light; and on the horizontal plane, one’s relationship to humankind. Inclusive and layered with meaning for those seeking to contemplate its presence, the abstract sculpture does not impose a particular belief system.
The new chapel’s environment is a source of great pride and inspiration for the campus, representing the spiritual dimension of healing and the care provided at Sutter Health.
