Exploring Innovation and Community at Fluxwerx: A Vancouver Adventure

Tabitha Pontino

July 29, 2024

Recently, my colleague Katie Marcyan and I were invited by Traci Godbey with ALR (Associated Lighting Representatives) to go on a tour of the Fluxwerx facility in Surrey, BC. Of course, I jumped at the opportunity because I LOVE Fluxwerx’s products. Lighting agents, interior designers, architects, and lighting designers from various regions of the country converged in Vancouver for the weekend ready to engage with the people and products of Fluxwerx.

First Impressions: Vancouver’s Charm

Our journey began with a warm reception in Vancouver, a city that immediately captivated us with its stunning architecture and picturesque mountains and waterfront. After settling in at the hotel, our California group was accompanied by Natalie Phillips, FW Western Regional Manager, and Vancouver Native, Kim Mort with FW Inside Sales and Customer Service, on an adventure to a delightful sushi dinner setting the perfect tone for the days ahead.

Day 2: Immersed in Innovation at Fluxwerx

On the second day, we ventured to Fluxwerx’s headquarters in Surrey. The facility itself was a testament to modern design, beautifully lit with Fluxwerx products showcasing their expertise in lighting solutions. We started off the day with some brief introductions taking the time to acknowledge our support for football (that’s soccer in America) teams playing later that weekend. Afterward, we did some quick ice breakers and then we were split into groups to tour the facility.

Our group began with a conversation about optics design with VP of Sales and Marketing, Adrian Howitt and Opto-Mechanical Designer, Kenton W., which, in my opinion, was the best way to start the tour. We learned that Fluxwerx was founded in 2011 and began product development in 2012. The founders came from a company who was still trying to reinvent the fluorescent tube with LEDs. So instead, they began with the inspiration of light through transparent material, something all of us are attracted to when we look out a window at a beautiful view. Hence the name of their debut product, View! Central to their innovation is the Anidolic-Extraction technology, a breakthrough in LED optics ensuring unparalleled light distribution.

Product Deep Dive and Design Insights

Adrian then joined us for a tour of the facility to see all the products installed around the office with Natalie, our CA rep. The conversation about optics was a great setup to then experience the amazing quality of light that these products create. We had the opportunity to interact with some of the products like Portal, Aperture, and Fold and get an up-close look at how they perform.

Aaron Prosch, Product Designer, and Chris McDonald, Mechanical Designer, illuminated the iterative design process, highlighting Fluxwerx’s commitment to sustainability and user-friendly installations. Their dedication to quality and efficiency was evident in every detail, from prototype stages to final production. We learned about the meticulous process behind each fixture, emphasizing aesthetics, performance, and functionality.

Factory Tour: Efficiency and Sustainability

We ended with the factory tour, where we witnessed Fluxwerx’s state-of-the-art production line. The facility hummed with activity as robots precisely manufactured components, highlighting Fluxwerx’s impressive 97% early delivery rate. Sustainability is core to Fluxwerx’s ethos, with 98% of materials recycled and local sourcing for manufacturing, underscoring their commitment to environmental stewardship.

Cultural Delights and Farewell

Evenings were as enriching as the days, from luxurious sunset yacht cruises to exploring Vancouver’s iconic Capilano Suspension Bridge (an adventure in overcoming fears!). We indulged in exquisite dining experiences, from farm-to-table delights at Nightingale to spontaneous encounters with local cuisine.

Reflections on Vancouver and Fluxwerx

As the trip concluded, I couldn’t help but reflect on the warmth and dedication of Fluxwerx’s team, epitomized by Adrian’s personal touch and commitment to his workforce. Vancouver left a permanent mark with its beauty and hospitality, making this journey not just educational but also deeply enriching on a personal level.

Overall, my experience with Fluxwerx and Vancouver was nothing short of exceptional. The journey offered profound insights into lighting innovation and community spirit, leaving me inspired and eager to share the brilliance of Fluxwerx’s products. Vancouver, with its blend of natural splendor and urban vibrancy, provided the perfect backdrop for this enlightening adventure.

If you ever find yourself in Vancouver, I highly recommend exploring Fluxwerx’s offerings and soaking in the city’s cultural treasures. It’s an experience that promises both intellectual stimulation and memorable moments.

Until next time, Vancouver!
